Aadi Pattam Thedi Vithai – Sow the seed in the Aadi Month for bountiful harvest.

This month is the start of Samba Cultivation. By the start of Aadi month, farmers plough and prepare the land for cultivation. And sowing starts after 18th of Aadi as the rivers get water after the onset of monsoon. For sowing, farmers look for an auspicious day, the date with a downward arrow marked in the Daily Sheet Calendar which favours for a new start. Before sowing, farmers perform prayers in the local temple and soak it.

And the field is inundated with water for at least 2 inches above the soil. The seeds are disseminated in the evening ie. after the sun nears to the horizon.

Two factors determine the timing, one is that the sprouting of a seed needs only water, warmth and oxygen as we had learnt in our primary science subject and sunlight isn’t invited for the process. The next major factor is the birds, the birds may feast on the seeds when dispersed during daytime.

By dawn the seeds would have sunk into the soft soil and sprouted out with a new life, safe from birds and looking up for sunlight to grow. .

In some families, the first handful of seeds is tossed by the little ones or elders for a bountiful harvest.

Why should sowing be done within Aadi month? The North East Monsoon reaches its peak during October by then the paddy should have grown high enough towering above to the   water withstanding the water stagnation..

There is a saying Kalathodu/Parvathodu payir sei translated to  All things need to be done at the perfect time without procrastination. So the seeds sown in August get ready for harvest in January.
