I always had a hesitation to do a pookolam. To start with, I chose a simple design with two colour flowers to fill in the kolam. I have used marigold and rose flowers for a contrast red and yellow colour combination. I made an outline of the design with chalk piece, then filled the spaces with the flower petals. A maiden effort and I was happy about the outcome .
The drawing of pookolam is bit tricky as you need to choose the correct colour and flower. IF you want to use the flowers as such then it would be too challenging as the size and orientation do matters while placing the flowers.
If you want to have a hassle free filling of flowers, then cut the flower petals with the help of the scissors. Cut into small, as small peices as you can. Remove the stalks from the flowers and cut only the petals. If you have two shade flower then cut and collect the shades separately so that you can use them for shade differentiation. You can use all parts of the flowers by collecting them and organizing them to get a place in the kolam. Its all about your preference to place the flowers.
